What is a chiropractor?

A Doctor of chiropractic is someone who's trained to analyze, detect and correct spinal misalignments that have been shown to help the body heal and function optimally. Unlike mainstream medicine, chiropractic is a natural form of health care and does not use drugs or surgery as a means of restoring function to the body. The holistic practice of chiropractic is defined as a science, art, and philosophy. The premise is based on the fact that the master system of the body consists of the brain, spinal cord, and nerve system that controls, coordinates and animates the function of all cells, tissues and organ systems of the body. Any interference to this nerve system leads to interference to its end tissues and organs leading to ill-health or "dis-ease". Correction of the spinal and extremity misalignments restores the flow of mental impulses through the nerve system allowing the body to heal.

Are chiropractors doctors?

Yes, Doctors of Chiropractic go through pre-medical/pre-chiropractic 4-year undergraduate studies before moving on to graduate school for a 5.5-year curriculum done at a 3.5-year pace. Upon graduation, students receive their doctorate while also successfully passing a 4 part National Boards exam for licensure. Once licensed, a Chiropractor is a primary care provider that offers a natural alternative to drugs and surgery.

What is the history of chiropractic care?

Chiropractic means, To practice with the hands. Chiropractic's history goes back to 1895 in Davenport, IA when Daniel David Palmer, DC gave the first spinal adjustment we know of, to correct a misaligned vertebra that was believed to be the cause of Harvey Lillard's sudden onset deafness. Upon correction of the misplaced vertebra, the man's hearing was restored. This created quite a stir and a profession began spreading like wildfire across the land. To this day Chiropractic is the #1 alternative health care choice in the world. Science and current research are only supporting the tenets of drugless, specific spinal care and it's role in the overall function of the body.

As a matter of fact, Roentgenography which is known as x-ray today was first employed by chiropractic for assessing and detecting spinal misalignments in addition to the pathology of the spine. Only later did the medical community adopt the technology for their own use after the chiropractic profession discovered it.

What does a chiropractor do?

There are many techniques and modalities chiropractors can use to alleviate pain, restore balance and remove interference manually and naturally to the body. Primarily chiropractors correct spinal misalignments for the restoration of normal mental or nerve impulses. They're trained in physical examination, neurology, physiology, nutrition, radiology, and biomechanics of the spine.

Are chiropractors useful?

Chiropractors serve as primary care providers and often are THE only doctor of choice for many of my patients. This is their choice, not mine. Whether this suits your health philosophy or not, patients make choices in their doctor's to help restore and maintain health and oftentimes want drugless or natural approaches and strategies to express their health. The philosophy, science, and art of chiropractic are quite appealing as a natural, holistic approach that empowers patient's to be there best and using drugs or surgery as a last resort if needed.

Does chiropractic work?

Yes, without question chiropractic works. It works because the body is a self-healing organism. That is of course when the nerve system is not interfered with, or the body is not suppressed by acute or chronic chemical, structural or emotional harm. Some of my biggest skeptics have reluctantly followed through, only to become its biggest fans. The amazing power of the body heals when it's given a chance. It works because it restores function from the inside out.

Are chiropractors safe?

Yes, chiropractors are known to have one of the lowest malpractice insurance premiums in the health care industry. This is because the risk is greater getting struck by lightning is greater than an injury from a chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractors are expertly trained in the anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics of correcting spinal misalignments and adjunctive soft tissue techniques for the body.

How do chiropractors relieve pain from injuries or accidents?

Injuries and accidents respond extremely well with chiropractic care. Nearly every professional team has a chiropractor as part of their health expertise. The chiropractor is a perfect fit for injuries that don't involve bone breaks. Whether it's an injury from working in the yard, playing on the field or court, or a motor vehicle accident, chiropractic adjustments help the body heal optimally by restoring normal alignment, balance, and healthy nerve and blood flow that reduces swelling, and maximizes the body's response to injured tissue. You don't have to sit long in my office to hear my patients share their stories of how quickly they feel relief from acute and chronic pain and injuries.

How does a chiropractor help lower back pain?

Chiropractors are spinal experts. One of the most common things we deal with is lower back pain. With a proper assessment, your chiropractor can pinpoint not only which vertebra or motor unit may be causing your pain or dysfunction but recommend a program of care for relief and stability along with supportive exercises to maintain healthy function.

Misalignments occur as a result of stress and injuries. With Activator methods, correction is extremely patient-friendly and often results occur more quickly than patients even expect.

How many chiropractic sessions do you need?

Every case is different. That depends on the problem you have and how long you've had it. Spinal imbalances, that are left uncorrected, worsen over time. Depending on your condition and the severity of your problem, it can be as little as a few adjustments to find relief or as many as a series of adjustments over the course of several weeks. Your chiropractor wants to see you feeling better fast and minimize any potential relapses, so it's important to understand your condition and your care for your best results.

What does a chiropractor treat?

Chiropractors can treat a wide range of disorders from musculoskeletal symptoms of headaches, neck, back, hip, shoulder and knee pain to digestive, bowel, bladder, sinus, ear infections, constipation, asthma, allergies, and immune weakness. Quite frankly that's the shortlist. In fact, research shows it can lower blood pressure both diastolic and systolic by 17 and 10mm/Hg respectively. The fact is that chiropractic treats spinal subluxations that interfere with all types of systems in the body. That's HOW it can affect so many organs and systems positively. So your chiropractor isn't really "treating" all the conditions as much as it's treating the cause of many conditions connected to the nerve system.

So what actually happened and why now?

Spinal misalignments can occur for many reasons, sometimes as a result of stress and injuries, working at a desk or computer, etc.

Are there any stretches or exercises I can do?

Certainly, you can begin stretching and exercising as soon as you feel ready. We can provide you with some good stretches that will help.

How long will this take to feel better or be ‘fixed’?

As a Madison WI chiropractor, it has been my experience that relief depends on how long this misalignment pattern has been going on. If your spinal decay shows this spinal problem has been present for several years it can take more time than more recent injuries.

How much will it cost?

If you are a new patient, check out our new patient special above. For all other fees, call the office for the most up-to-date information.

Can spinal degeneration get better or go away?

The spinal degeneration that’s present is like water under the bridge - it doesn’t get better. With proper care and lifestyle changes, it’s possible to slow down further deterioration and decay. Restoring your alignment is the first step in preventing further damage.
